NATO: No new Cold War with China

Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said that even though China was not a NATO adversary or enemy, member states needed to address together with the challenges that Beijing posed to NATO allies' security.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg on Monday said that there is no new Cold War with China, but the western allies will have to adapt to the challenge of Beijing's rise.Ā 

In an interview with a Canadian news network CBC, Stoltenberg said that even though China was not a NATO adversary or enemy, member states needed to address together with the challenges that Beijing posed to NATO allies' security.

The G7 leaders had reiterated the need to maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific, which is inclusive and based on the rule of law. The world leaders highlighted the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and encouraged the peaceful resolution of long-pending problems.

The G7 leaders expressed serious concerns over the situation in the East and South China Seas and strongly opposed any unilateral attempts to change the status quo and increase tensions.

Stoltenberg noted that it was important for other countries to deal with China on common problems like climate change and arms control.
