Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani vows to prevent further instability, as Taliban inch closer to Kabul
The statement comes as the Taliban has captured city after city over the last one week in Afghanistan and now are on the gates of Kabul.
FollowAddressing the nation, Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani on Saturday said there was a huge threat, and remobilizing Afghan security and defence forces is a 'top priority'.
In a recorded message, Ghani assured that as a President, his focus is to prevent further instability, violence and displacement of people. He further said he would not allow imposed war on Afghans to bring more killings, loss of the gains of the last 20 years, destruction of public property.
Ghani made no indication that he would quit or accept responsibility for the current crisis, but he did say that "consultations" were being held to attempt to stop the conflict. He further stated that he has begun comprehensive talks inside the government with elders, political leaders, people's representatives, and foreign partners in order to achieve a reasonable and definite political solution that would ensure the peace and stability of the Afghan people. While the government troops have been unable to stand up to the Taliban, Ghani thanked the military "who have protected the nation valiantly and with strong commitment."
The statement comes as the Taliban has captured city after city over the last one week in Afghanistan and now are on the gates of Kabul. This comes just a day after the Ghani government offered power-sharing to the Taliban, who turned it down.
