After Pakistan, now Bangladeshi fundamentals target Hindu temples, 11 arrested

In a shameful incident, religious fundamentals in Bangladesh vandalised four temples and a number of shops belonging to Hindu community in Khulna district. It is said that the procession by Hindu groups for divine intervention against Covid-19 was passing through a Masjid and groups involved in verbal clashes soon turned violent. Soon, hundreds of extremists took to the street and attacked temples and shops of Hindus.

Days after the temple attack incident in Muslim-dominated Pakistan, now similar incident has surfaced from another neighbouring nation Bangladesh as religious extremists attacked four temples and shops belonging to the minority community of Bangladesh.

As per reports, the incident was reported from Rupsha Sub-District of Khulna district on Saturday evening when Hindu groups took a procession to reach Shaili Mahashamshan Temple seeking divine intervention against the Covid-19 pandemic.

As the procession passed through a Masjid during evening prayers on August 5, the religious fundamentals took objections to Hindu groups singing prayer songs and soon clashes erupted.

And hundreds of self-appointed religious custodians of Islam gathered at the midnight and started to attack the temple and also the crematorium on August 6.

Soon, the violence spread into other three temples in the vicinity of the district and it is said that 10 idols were desecrated and 6 shops were also targeted in the attack. As the law and order situation was at stake, the Rapid Action Battalion took to the streets and ensured normalcy.

The officials from Rupsha held a conciliatory meeting between six villagers here and members from both the community took part. The Rupsha  administration assured that repair work will be taken up soon.

Meanwhile, 11 people were arrested in connection with violence and the probe is on. Additional police forces have been deployed at the temple site.

Recently a Ganesha temple was attacked by hundreds of religious fundamentalists after a Hindu minority boy reportedly unirated at the holy site. The boy was let off as he was a minor but the fundamentalists armed with sticks and stones attacked and vandalised the temple at Bhong Town. The images were shared by Pakistan law maker from Hindu community Ramesh Kumar Vankwani demanding justice. The incident was condemned by PM Imram Khan and later about 50 people were taken into custody for attacking Hindu temple.
