According to reports, the scrappage policy of vehicles states that old and unfit vehicles be scrapped and replaced with modern and new vehicles on the roads. The policy came into effect on April 1, 2022.

Speaking to reporters, BJP MLA Neeraj Zimba said that the Union minister fell ill after attending a programme at Siliguri and was attended by doctors. He also said that Gadkari later recovered and left in his car.

"The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is carrying out a pilot project of automatic number plate recognition system (Automatic Number Plate Reader cameras) to enable automated toll collection without stopping vehicles," said Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. Furthermore, he added, "We hope to achieve two goals with this new technology: free flow of traffic at toll booths and pay as you go."

The senior minister's remarks follow his statement from earlier this week, when he said that the Centre has decided to ban all kinds of seat belt alarm stoppers in the country.

The Union minister said he plans to strictly enforce this rule and will introduce penalties for non-compliance. "The behaviour of the people is very important. We need to change the mindset of the people," he said.
