In what comes as yet another setback for Wimbledon 2021, reigning world number five, Austria’s Dominic Thiem, has pulled out of the Grand Slam. He suffered a wrist injury during the ongoing Mallorca Championships pre-quarters on Tuesday against Adrian Mannarino of France, resulting in a walkover. At the same time, it will likely keep him out for several weeks.

“I’m going to do everything the doctors say in order to recover as quickly as possible. They’ve informed me that I might be out for several weeks, but I will do my best to be back on court soon,” he said, reports ATP.

Thiem underwent tests on his injured wrist, which have revealed that he has a “detachment of the posterior sheath of the ulnar side of the right wrist”. Dr Angel Ruiz Cotorro, who is monitoring Thiem’s progress, has said that the Austrian will have to wear a splint for at least five weeks.

The world number five has played in six Wimbledon main draws to date, while his best outing came during the 2017 edition, where he managed to reach until the pre-quarters. Meanwhile, he would be hoping for a quick recovery as he looks to defend his US Open crown in August, his only Slam title to date.

Thiem has become the second top seed to withdraw from the Slam after Spain’s Rafael Nadal did the same last week, including the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. As for the Spaniard, he is looking to keep himself fit and prolong his career rather than indulging himself in heavy competitiveness at the twilight phase of his career.
