Tokyo Paralympics: Mariyappan Thangavelu, Sharad Kumar give India high jump medals

India's glorious ride in the Tokyo Paralympics continued to gain a couple of more medals. Mariyappan Thangavelu and Sharad Kumar won silver and bronze, respectively, in the high jump.

It was yet another proud moment for India at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020. A couple of more medals have arrived for the nation, as Mariyappan Thangavelu and Sharad Kumar have won the silver and bronze, respectively, in the high jump.

Thangavelu managed to jump to the height of 1.86 metres. Meanwhile, Sharad succeeded in getting 1.83m. The third Indian in the reckoning was Varun Singh Bhati, but he could only manage 1.77m and finished seventh.

Both the athletes competed in the T42 category, in which the athlete has a deficiency in the leg, length difference, along with impaired muscle power or lack of passive leg movements. The athletes usually compete standing.

Following the same, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi applauded both the athletes individually for their exceptional performance. "Soaring higher and higher! Mariyappan Thangavelu is synonymous with consistence and excellence. Congratulations to him for winning the Silver Medal. India is proud of his feat. @189thangavelu #Paralympics #Praise4Para" tweeted Modi.

"The indomitable @sharad_kumar01 has brought smiles on the faces of every Indian by winning the Bronze Medal. His life journey will motivate many. Congratulations to him. #Paralympics #Praise4Para" Modi wrote in another tweet.
