Tokyo Paralympics: Harvinder Singh wins archery bronze, a first for India

India has nearly doubled its medal tally at the Tokyo Paralympics compared to the Tokyo Olympics. India won its 13th medal, with Harvinder Singh bagging an archery bronze.

India continued to cruise in the Tokyo Olympics, as it won its 13th medal on Friday. Indian para-archer Harvinder Singh claimed a bronze medal as he beat Kim Min Su of South Kore 6-5 in a shootout.

Harvinder had finished 21st in the ranking round, as he survived three elimination battles before it coming to an end against United States of America's Kevin Mather in the semis. Consequently, this medal was also India's first in archery.

The Indian won the opening set 26-24 before the Korean bounced back 29-27 in the second. As for the third, Harvinder managed 28 with a couple of tens, while Kim scored 25. In the fourth set, both worked 25 each, while in the fifth, the Korean edged past 26-25 to enter the shootout. The Indian won the shootout 10-8 to bag the bronze.

Following Harvinder's feat, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi cheered his achievement by tweeting, "Outstanding performance by @ArcherHarvinder. He displayed great skill and determination, resulting in his medal victory. Congratulations to him for winning a historic Bronze medal. Proud of him. Wishing him the very best for the times ahead. #Paralympics #Praise4Para".

It was India's third medal of the day. Earlier, Praveen Kumar claimed a silver in the high jump, while Avani Lekhara added a bronze in the shooting.

Praveen scripted a new Asian record after jumping to a height of 2.07 metres. It was also his personal best performance in the event, while he has become the youngest Indian Paralympian to win a medal at the age of 18.

Avani added another medal to her campaign, as she has won the bronze in the 50m Rifle 3 Position of the SH1 category. She had earlier won the gold in the 10m air rifle.
