In what was primarily a tough day for the Indian contingent on Day 1 of the Tokyo Olympics 2020, it ended in yet another heartbreak. The Indian women's hockey team suffered an embarrassing 5-1 defeat to the Netherlands in the competition's opening game.

Felice Albers put the Dutch ahead in the sixth minute before Captain Rani levelled it four minutes later, as the scores were levelled at half-time. The second half was all about the Netherlands, as it dominated with possession and attacks.

Margot Geffen restored the Dutch lead at 33rd, followed by the third from Albers ten minutes later. While Frederique Matla tripled the lead with the fourth in the 45th minute, Caia van Maasakker sealed it with the winner at the 52nd.

The main drawback of the Indians was its inability to penetrate the Dutch defence, while it lacked ball time. However, the Dutch attack was superior, while its gameplay was far more organised than the Indians.

India still has four more games to seal its fate in the competition. It plays Germany on Tuesday.
