It was heartbreaking and rejoiceful at the same time for India, as female Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain won the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. However, she could not progress to the final, losing her welterweight semi-final bout to Busenaz Sürmeneli of Turkey.

The Turkish was dominant right from the start with her defences and punches. Although the Indian managed to land a few punches, she missed most of her attempts, as her opponent ducked her nicely, besides counter attacking her well to win the opening round 5-0.

In the second round, it was no different, as Lovlina tried to be a bit more aggressive. However, Busenaz was just too good with her defences, while the Indian had no answers to her counterattacks, losing the round 5-0 again.

It was just a formality on the Turkish's part in the final round, who just defended it out, toying against Lovlina. Although the Indian tried to land some fierce punches on her by going for wild swings, it was to no avail, as it was yet another 5-0 win for Busenaz.

Also, during the opening round, Lovlina was warned for over attacking despite the referee calling for a halt. Nevertheless, the defeat also brings India's boxing campaign at the Games to an end.

Meanwhile, her bronze is India's third medal at the global extravaganza and India's second bronze. While weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won the silver, badminton player PV Sindhu bagged the bronze.
