Nadal's last competitive appearance was this month during the Washington Open, where he was ousted in the pre-quarters. Since his 2021 French Open semis defeat to eventual champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia, he has skipped some top tournaments, including the Wimbledon and Tokyo Olympics.

Nadal has become the third high-profile name to pull out of the US Open after Roger Federer of Switzerland and defending champion Dominic Thiem of Austria. Nadal has won 20 Grand Slam titles, and a title more would make him the most male Slam winner.
