Here is the list of sportspersons who have been honoured with the Khel Ratna award since the awards were instituted in 1991–1992.
The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awards, now renamed as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, are given to sportspersons who have shown spectacular and outstanding performance over a period of four years prior to the year during which the award is to be given.
The award is given for excellence in sports and games at international events, including Olympics, Asian Games, World Championships, Commonwealth Games and World Cup.
