Manchester United ropes in Raphael Varane from Real Madrid

Raphaël Varane is a French defender who had been playing for Real Madrid. He turns out to be United's second top signing for the upcoming 2021-22 season after Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.

English giant Manchester United has made its second high-profile signing ahead of the 2021-22 English Premier League season. The club has roped in French defender Raphaël Varane from Real Madrid, as the final deal is subject to his medical clearance.

As for his transfer fee, it is yet to be announced by both clubs. However, it is expected to be around €50 million, as per multiple reports.

"Manchester United is delighted to announce the club has reached agreement with Real Madrid for the transfer of French international defender and World Cup winner, Raphaël Varane, subject to a medical and to player terms being finalised," said United in a statement.

"Real Madrid C. F. and Manchester United FC have agreed the transfer of Raphaël Varane. Our club thanks the player for his professionalism and exemplary conduct throughout his ten seasons representing our colours, during which time he has won 18 titles: 4 Champions Leagues, 4 Club World Cups, 3 European Super Cups, 3 LaLiga titles, 1 Copa del Rey and 3 Spanish Super Cups. Real Madrid would like to express their gratitude to Raphaël Varane and his family and wish him the best of luck in this new stage of his career," noted Madrid in its official statement.

Varane, who began his senior club career with French club Lens, had a highly successful decade-long stint with Madrid. While he has also scored 19 goals in 384 club appearances, his collection of accolades with Madrid is genuinely remarkable, including the FIFA World Cup 2018. He has become the second high-profile transfer at Old Trafford for the season after Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.
