A budding cricketer’s life was cut short after he met a tragic death in Sri Lanka.

A 12-year-old Gujarat-based cricketer who was part of India’s Under-17 cricket team drowned in a swimming pool and died on Tuesday, September 5.

The 19-member cricket team was in Sri Lanka to participate in a tournament in the Island nation.

According to reports in Sri Lanka media, four members of the squad were in the swimming pool of a hotel in Pamunugama on Tuesday evening. He was admitted to Pamunugama Hospital but had later died, reported Sunday Times.

The report further added that the body of the cricketer to the Ragama Teaching Hospital for a post-mortem examination and the police is investigating the matter.

Cricketers often die due to unforeseen circumstances.

A 20-year-old cricketer from West Bengal, Ankit Keshri, died in 2015 due to cardiac arrest after colliding with a fellow cricketer on the field.

A young Pakistani batsman, Zubair Ahmed, died when a ball hit him during a club match.

Australian Phil Hughes died in November 2014 after being hit by a fast bouncer in a first-class match.
