In what was termed the ‘fight of the century’ boxing legend Floyd Mayweather emerged victorious by beating MMA Champion Conor McGregor by way of technical knockout in the 10th round.

The fight went on longer than usual since eveyone was expecting Mayweather, an unbeaten, five-division world champion boxer to make quick work of the mixed martial artist making his pro boxing debut.

Conor went right at the champion in the initial round, using quick movements and feint strikes to scare the opponent like he does in his MMA fights. Conor was at an advantage till the third round. And then fatigue set in.

Mayweather, who is better conditioned for longer fights, did his homework and knew that the martial artist was not made for long-lasting fights.

In the 10th round Mayweather backed McGregor onto the ropes with a series of rights and lefts. McGregor’s face was completely bloodied. He was about to fall through the ropes, and the referee stepped in to stop the fight with 1:55 remaining in the round.

“I gave the fans what they wanted to see,” Mayweather said after the fight. “I told them that I owed them for the Pacquiao fight. I must come straight ahead and give them a show.”

“This was my last fight tonight ladies and gentlemen, for sure,” Mayweather added.

It was evident by round nine that Conor was tired and need a KO to win the bout. But his punches lacked the bite and Mayweather was easily side-stepping whatever Conor threw at him. In the final round Conor’s legs gave way.

After the fight was over the two men embrace in the ring. There was clearly respect from Floyd for the rookie who lasted 10 rounds with one of the great fighters.

After the match Conor McGregor said, “I thought it was close. I get a little floppy when I get tired. He was a lot more composed. You’ve got to give it to him. I don’t know if I will box again.”

This bout has taken Mayweather’s tally to 50-0. Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather retires undefeated.
