India continues to bleed at Rio 2016: Archer Atanu Das bows out

Archer Atanu Das bows out of Rio 2016

Another exit for India at the Rio Olympics 2016 with the elimination of Archer Atanu Das from the pre-quarterfinals of men's individuals recurve.

Das, who impressed all by reaching this far in his maiden appearance at the games, lost a thrilling fight to South Korea's Seungyun Lee 4-6 ((28-30, 30-28, 27-27, 27-28, 28-28). The last Indian man who reached the round of 16 of the Archery event at Olympics was Satya Dev Prasad in 2004.

Das, who made his international debut in 2008, put up a close fight against the Korean in the pre-quarterfinal on Friday. Following the loss in the opening set, he came back winning the second before tying the third set.

The Indian had a superb chance to win the fourth set but Lee shot a perfect 10 to seal it. The fifth set was a must-win for Das, but unfortunately only managed a tie and crashed out of Rio 2016.

Das was India's only hope in Archery after Deepika Kumari and Bombayla Devi bombed out the of women’s individual event on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the shooting team continues to face disappointment. Gagan Narang and Chain Singh failed to qualify for the final of the 50-metre rifle prone event. The only shooter who has come closest to winning a medal was Abhinav Bindra, who lost on the bronze medal by a whisker at the 10-metre air rifle event.

The Indian contingent meanwhile, continues its hunt for a first medal at the Rio 2016.
