Bengaluru: Dr Sadashiv Shetty, orthodontist and principal of Bapuji Dental College, was ready to drive down from Devanagare to Bengaluru on his 65th birthday to meet with a few of his students for a small get-together. But there was a slight change in schedule. Instead of getting him to drive down to the city, the students arranged a helicopter for him to travel from Devanagere to Bengaluru.

Dr Shetty went to his college in Devanagere first. One of his former students picked him up at around 10 am. While Dr Shetty thought they were heading to Bengaluru, he was driven to MBA College Grounds, where a helicopter was ready to fly him to the city.

Dr Shetty and his wife, who joined him at the helipad, landed at HAL Airport in an hour’s time, where a white Rolls-Royce waited for them outside gate number 30. He was chauffeured into a suite in Taj West End.

“My students said that they would like to celebrate my 65th birthday in Bengaluru. I agreed to it and said that I would meet them. Instead of following the plan, they surprised me by taking me in a chopper from Devanagere to Bengaluru. I will be retiring soon, and this will be a wonderful memory,” Shetty said.

Close to 150 post graduate students out of 200 Dr Shetty had taught in college flew down from different parts of the world including New Zealand, Brunei and the UAE.

According to a ToI report, one of his students said that Dr Shetty always ensured that if there was any new technology available, he would ensure that it would be in campus the very next month.

Dr Shetty began his 39-year teaching career at Bapuji College in 1980. He took over as the principal of the college the same year and has been acknowledged as the main reason behind the meteoric rise of the college into one of the finest institutions over the years.

A film made on Dr Shetty by one of his students was also screened on the day.
