The Kerala-based godman, whose genitals were chopped off by a young woman for sexually abusing her for years, has taken around Rs 40 lakh from the victim's family over the years in the name of 'puja', it has now emerged.

Sreehari aka Swami Gangeshananda, had been frequenting the 23-year-old's house in Pettah near Thiruvananthapuram for the last seven years to perform several pujas to bring relief to her bed-ridden father.

Some of the relatives have alleged that Sreehari has taken Rs 40 lakh from the victim's family and had also seized their car, according to Manorama. The police looked into the matter and confirmed that some financial transactions have taken place between the accused and the family. However, the family is yet to file a police complaint in connection with this.

The accused had raped the woman several times over the years during his visits to perform puja. And on Friday night, the woman cut off Sreehari's genitals in a bid to resist another rape attempt. He later underwent surgery the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital and is out of danger.

On Sunday, the magistrate visited Sreehari at the hospital and remanded him in police custody till June 3. The godman kept quiet when the judge asked him about the incident. Earlier, the accused had told the police that he chopped off the genitals himself.

Meanwhile, Sreehari has been moved to a separate cell at the Medical College. Once he recovers his health, he will be shifted to the jail.
