Plus one student commits suicide parents allege harassment

In yet another case of alleged harassment by school authorities, a plus one student committed suicide in Varkala, Thiruvananthapuram. The relatives allege that the teachers and vice-principal harassed the boy mentally.

Arjun, 17, a student of MGM School at Ayiroor was found hanging in his house. His death comes just months after the suicide of Jishnu Pranoy, the first year Bech student of Nehru Engineering College, Pampady.

Arjun's parents filed a complaint at Varkala police station and alleged that the boy was subjected to harassment by school authorities. They said the teachers harassed him for scoring low marks in the model exams conducted recently.

Like in the case of Pranoy, school management said Arjun was caught copying during exams.

School administration claimed that they asked Arjun to appear for a retest and asked his parents to come to school after the boy was found copying. The school authorities said they neither insulted or threatened the student and just warned him.

Later, Arjun told his parents that he would commit suicide if the teachers insist on conducting retest.

"As per the complaint, harassment by teachers prompted the student to take the extreme step," Varkala sub-inspector K R Biju said.

The boy was found hanging in his bedroom on March 14. School Parents Teachers Association stated that they will inquire about the incident and will take action accordingly.
