MBBS student Facebook post near rape Thrissur Medical College

Crimes against women and minors have been on the rise in Kerala in the last few years. Lack of adequate security measures has been pointed out as one of the major reasons in this. There have been several complaints about the safety measures at schools, colleges and other educational institutions. However, despite repeated complaints, the concerned authorities continue turning a blind eye till an untoward incident happens. Let's take a look at a shocking incident that happened at a renowned hospital in the state.

Christina Elsa Sunny, an MBBS student who is currently doing house surgeoncy at the Government Medical College in Thrissur, discloses a traumatic incident where a stranger got into her bed in the middle of the night at the very accommodation provided to her by the hospital authorities.

We wake up only when a JISHA or NIRBHAYA happens

According to her Facebook post, the medical college authorities have allocated an accommodation for all female house surgeons on the fourth floor of the hospital itself. Christina and nine other colleagues have been staying there for the past one year or so. She says despite having 10 women staying there, the hospital authorities have not provided any sort of security to them. Strangers, who visit the hospital for various purposes, have easy access to the place and there have been incidents of burglary and unauthorised entry.

"On the night of 19 May 2017, something happened that did shatter my perceptions and my attitude towards the society. We were in deep sleep on that night in our room and my friend got a phone call from casualty and she had to go out immediately. I regret to say that we couldnt lock the room from inside as we were in deep sleep. (sic)

"On that night, in the midst of my sleep, I felt like something was crawling on to my body and that woke me up suddenly. In the semi darkness, I have seen a hazy figure aged nearly 20 in his shorts about the foot-end of my bed. I screamed my hell out, my friends woke up and came for my rescue. The intruder romped out before we could identify his face. As terrified as it could be, my friends rang our collegiates and some of the boys set forth a quick search in the dark corridor and the premises. They could'nt find anyone out there. (sic)"

After once again reminding that she and her friends are totally unsafe there, Christina ends the post with the line "We wake up only when a JISHA or NIRBHAYA happens"... a question that we should all ask ourselves.
