Man sets infant on fire to seek revenge on family

In a tragic incident, a two-month-old infant was set on fire allegedly by a relative in Manjeswaram, Kasargod. The relative allegedly poured petrol on the bed of the baby and lit it to settle scores with child’s mother.

The baby is battling for life with 50 percent burns. Asan Ahmed, son of Junaida and Ashraf, is still in danger, said the doctors of AJ Hospital in Managaluru, where he is being treated.

Khaleel, a relative of the boy’s father Ashraf poured petrol on the bed on which Asan was sleeping. Though child’s maternal mother Subaida saw Khaleel in the act, he lit the bed before she could reach to him and fire engulfed the baby, said Kumbala Circle Inspector V V Manoj.

Subaida also suffered burns while trying to rescue the child. Hearing her screams neighbours rushed in and Khaleel fled the scene, the police said.

The police later took him into custody. On questioning, Khaleel told police that he wanted to take revenge on the family and to settle the score with the mother of the child. He wanted to marry Junaida’s sister and had informed the matter to her. “But the family fixed her marriage with another person,” the police said.

Khaleel reportedly told police that he felt cheated. His intention was just to scare Junaida and not to kill the child, the officer said.

The police have booked a case and have charged him with the attempt to murder.
