Congress leaders in Kerala slammed BJP president Amit Shah for labelling Mahatma Gandhi as 'chatur bania' and has demanded an apology from the saffron party chief.

In a statement in the state Assembly, Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala said Shah committed an "unpardonable mistake".

"By insulting the Father of the Nation, the BJP leader has insulted the country, and it was a reflection of the darkness in him which came out through his words. Shah's words will be rejected by Indians and his place in India's history will be in the dustbin," Chennithala said on Sunday.

Hitting out at Shah, former KPCC president VM Sudheeran said in a Facebook post that Shah had insulted both Gandhi and the freedom struggle, and demanded an apology from him.

Sudheeran also wanted prosecution proceedings to be launched against Shah for making the alleged statements insulting the Father of the Nation, which amounted to sedition, a punishable offence.

Several politicians like Goa MP and Congress leader Shantaram Naik and DMK working president MK Stalin have also criticised Shah for the comment.
