Women smash coral from their Mangal Sutra fearing rumour

- Last year it was a rumor about gifting a silver Kada to son in law.
FollowA baseless rumor nobody knows who or where started spread like wildfire to hundreds of villages in north Karnataka overnight causing women to spend sleepless night on Tuesday. It all started when women believed word of mouth rumor that the coral in their Mangal Sutra would cause grave danger to husbands. That eventually spread to sons also. Fearing death to husband and son hundreds of women smashed the coral in their chain. They spread the 'news' through phones, Whatsapp, Facebook and just by word of mouth.
Mainly the rumor spread thick in Bellary, Koppala, Gadag, Haveri, Dharawada, Davanagere, Bagalakote, Raichur. Hundreds of villages in over 20 taluks women believed the rumor. Women whose husbands were out of town were so scared that they prayed over night for their husbands to return.
Reacting to the this madness Minister for Women and Child Welfare Umasree gave a statement asking women not to fall for such false news. She even suspected that may be it was the handwork of coral traders. She said action would be taken against anyone spreading such false rumor.
However Vasudeva Raikar, a jewelry shop owner has advised the women not to smash the coral as it is expensive each costing anything between Rs 400 to Rs 3500. He also said that coral has always been worn along with Mangal Sutra.
It can be recalled that last year during the month of Ashada, a wild rumor had spread that silver Kada must be given to son in law. People begged, borrowed and even sold stuff to buy a silver Kada for the son in law. This year it is breaking of coral in the chain.
Even in neighboring Adhra and Telangana also the rumor spread. There the women removed their chain containing coral and kept aside.
