FollowThe Karnataka government wants to have peacocks in the Vidhana Soudha premises. This is inspired by peacocks at the Rashtrapathi Bhavan in Delhi and in Parliament premises. But it has raised a question as to who should take the responsibility of bringing peacocks to Vidhana Soudha. The Horticulture Department and the Forest Department are at logger heads over this, reported Kannada Prabha.
The garden outside Vidhana Soudha is being maintained by Horticulture Department. The chief secretary has written to the Horticulture Department to get peacocks at the earliest. But protecting the peacock is the responsibility of the Forest Department. The Horticulture Department officials replied stating that they can only carry out planting a kind of palm trees that peacocks are fond of at four corners of the Vidhana Soudha.
It is well known that peacock can survive in calm regions, far from human habitat. Vidhana Soudha surrounding is noisy and heavy traffic is common. To bring peacocks from their natural surroundings and transplant them at Vidhana Soudha will only result in disaster say bird experts.
The idea occurred to MLC V S Ugrappa. He suggested that peacocks should be made to live at Raj Bhavan, Cobbon Park and Vidhana Soudha garden to increase its aesthetics. But Bengaluru deputy forest officer Deepika Bajapei has said that peacocks cannot live in such noisy place like Vidhana Soudha.
