The reason why people are happy over standing in long queues will shock you

This morning queue in front of a shop is not to buy groceries or to get Aadhaar or PAN card. These people in Chamarajanagar are standing in a queue to buy alcohol.

This is the condition in many places in the state following Supreme Court’s rule that all bars and pubs within 500 metres of the highway must be closed. The rule came into effect on July 1.

Thus this line is the result of many bars on the highway being closed. Thus people from distant places are seen thronging the bars situated inside the village. Maybe for fear of stock getting over, there is a long queue even much before it is evening.

Such queues were a common thing in Kerala, where state establishments ran liquor shops, and there were a handful of outlets selling liquor.

Such long queues were seen at a wine shop at Begur in Gundlupet.

However, amid chaos and commotions about bars and pubs shutting down at MG Road and Koramangala in Bengaluru, this news comes as a reprieve for the 731 pubs within the city precincts. Owing to the SC directive to shut down pubs within 500 meters of a National Highway, some of the oldest restaurants were asked to stop serving alcohol. These included Hard Rock Cafe, Pecos Mojo, 13th Floor, Wyt restopub and The Pub World. Although the micro breweries were safe, night lovers in the city regretted the move, calling it the end of 'nightlife in Bengaluru'.
