Shocking Man kills depressed and overweight sister for being a hurdle to his marriage

In a shocking incident in Bengaluru, a man killed his sister allegedly for being a hurdle in his way of getting married.

The victim, 28-year-old Mahalakshmi lived with her brother Shiv Kumar in Anchepete in Bengaluru. Lately, she was suffering from extreme depression after her mother died. She had gained considerable weight because of which all her marriage proposals were getting cancelled.

Mahalakshmi was dependent on her father, 58-year-old Nanjundappa, and would take money from him for her illness. Mahalakshmi was apparently paranoid and had forced her younger brother Shiv Kumar, who worked in a jewellery store, to quit a year ago.

While talking to Bangalore Mirror, Chickpet sub-division ACP N Niranjan said, “Mahalakshmi wanted her brother to take care of her instead of going for work. She did not even want him to get married as she felt that after his marriage, he would stay with his wife and not take care of her. The victim, who would display violent behaviour at home by throwing utensils and destroying furniture, was successful in making her brother leave his job and stay at home to take care of her."

24-year-old Shiv, who nurtured dreams of marriage, realised that his sister would never let him marry. Mahalakshmi was in the habit of taking a nap until late evening after lunch. Shiv Kumar saw this as a perfect opportunity. Shiv had already purchased a plastic wire. On June 28, he used the wire to strangle her in her sleep.

Nanjundappa rushed Mahalakshmi to Victoria Hospital thinking she tried committing. However, the post-mortem report showed that the cause of her death was strangulation. Police investigation revealed that nobody had tried to break into their home and Nanjundappa was himself very ill to have committed the crime.

When both the father and the son were called in for questioning, 24-year-old Shiv Kumar reportedly confessed that he had indeed killed his sister. He was charged with section 302 (murder) of IPC and was sent to judicial custody.
