The internationally known environmental conservationist 105-year-old Salumarada Thimmakka gets a meager sum of Rs 500 per month as old age pension. Answering a query by Karkala MLA V Sunil Kumar about the facility provided by the government to Salumarada Thimmakka, Revenue Minister Kagodu Timmappa said, under the Social Security scheme, she is being given Rs 500 per month since 1998 Jan 1.

Sunil Kumar took objection to it and said it is a shame that such a meager sum is granted and urged the government to sanction Rs 10,000 per month and also take care of her medical expenses. Minister Umashree intervened and clarified that the government has been taking care of all medical expenses of Salumarada Thimmakka and it will continue to do so in future also. Revenue Minister Kagodu Timmappa assured he would look into increasing the pension amount.
'Saalumarada' Thimmakka has been conferred with many awards including Indira Priyadarshini Vriksamitra Award, Godfrey Phillips Bravery Award and has been featured on BBC's 100 most influential women in 2016.
