AICC general secretary in charge of Karnataka KC Venugopal in a press conference said that the name of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president would be announced by May 31.

But the sources say that a Dalit will be selected to the post. As G Parameshwara, the current KPCC President too belongs to the Dalit community; he is likely to continue as the party president. However, there is no official confirmation made in this regard.

The likes of DK Shivakumar, MB Patil, SR Patil are in the race for the post. If Parameshwara is asked to continue, it will be a huge setback for the trio. However, in Karnataka, the caste calculations are on a high and whichever leader can manage the party and get the maximum votes for the party will be made the president.

There are rumours that the Congress party is keen on giving this post to a Dalit. Though AICC President Sonia Gandhi wanted to give the post to Mallikarjun Kharge, currently serving as the leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, he did not want to come back to state politics as of now. Thus the hunt is on for a Dalit leader who can lead the party to victory.

However, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s statements regarding the KPCC president’s post made headlines when he had said that the party won by-elections in Gundlupet and Nanjanagud only because of his leadership and that he can manage the party president’s post as well.

This did not go well with Parameshwara who is eying the CM’s post for a long time now. If Parameshwara is selected and proves his mettle in the forthcoming Assembly elections, he might stand a chance for the CM’s post.

However, apart from the speculations, it is also said that DK Shivakumar is close to Venugopal, who will take the call on selecting the KPCC President. Will Shivakumar’s closeness with Venugopal have an effect, or Parameshar and others have a chance of leading the party will be clear in a day or two.
