- Ramya to head AICC’s social media team
- She was handpicked by Rahul Gandhi
- Party yet to make an official statement
There was, however, no official communication yet to this effect. When contacted, the AICC communication wing told Asianet Newsable to get a confirmation to this effect from Ramya herself. Party insiders in the Karnataka unit of Congress, however, confirmed the appointment. Also, the Jharkhand Congress congratulated Ramya on twitter.
Divya Spandana, who took on the screen name Ramya, forayed into politics at the peak of her acting career. She was the reigning queen of Sandalwood for over a decade, but she made a gradual exit from the film industry after entering politics.
She joined the Indian Youth Congress in 2012, and went on to become a Member of Parliament from Mandya by winning the by-elections in 2013. In 2014, she re-contested from Mandya, only to lose to the JD(S) candidate C S Puttaraju.
Ramya, who is extremely active on social media, has been the party’s voice raising several contentious issues. She even faced a sedition complaint for saying “Pakistan is not hell, people there are like us”, in a retort to former Defense minister Manohar Parrikar’s statement, last year.
Sources said that Ramya was considered for the post given her active involvement in social media. It is learnt that she has replaced Deepender Singh Hooda, who is part of the communications wing of AICC. Hooda is an MP from Haryana.
Despite repeated attempts, Ramya was not available for comment.
