The Kannada and Culture Directorate has issued an order appointing senior artiste M J Kamalakshmi as the new chairperson of Karnataka Lalitha Kala Academy. This is the first time a woman is appointed as the head of the academy since its inception 50 years ago, reported Kannada Prabha.
Every time there was an opening for the post of chairman for Lalitha Kala Academy Kamalakshmi’s name used to be recommended and every time appointing her was ruled out. In the last term too her name figured in the candidate’s list. Finally she has been honoured with the post. Kannada and Culture Minister Umashree issued an order on Monday appointing her as the chairperson.
Her term will be for three years. The list of members is yet to be finalised. Previous chairman M S Murthy had vacated the chair two months ago. M J Kamalakshmi has served at the Chitrakala Parishat in various capacities as an officer, secretary, faculty and principal. This experience was considered for appointing her as the chairperson.
