After UP, Karnataka tops list of states with most communal riots

  • Altogether 300 incidents of communal violence have been reported in Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh.
  • UP registered 16 deaths and 151 injuries while 3 people lost their lives in Karnataka, while 93 were wounded.

Karnataka tops communal incidents list since 2014

Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh reportedly tops the country's incidences of communal violence this year. With 300 of them, both the states are said to have had 36 and 60 incidents respectively. In fact, across the country 44 people were killed and another 892 suffered injuries in communal incidents. According to a report by the Deccan Chronicle, UP registered 16 deaths and 151 injuries while 3 people lost their lives in Karnataka, while 93 were wounded.

According to a debate in the Lok Sabha, some of the other states that reported higher number of communal incidents Madhya Pradesh (29),  West Bengal (26), Bihar (23), Rajasthan (27) and Gujarat and Maharashtra (20 each). Although there has been a gradual decrease in the number of communal incidents across the country, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh have always topped the list. 2016 saw 703 communal incidents, which is a decrease from 751 reported incidents in 2015. In 2014, there were in all 644 incidents. Incidentally, between 2014 and May 2017, there were 2,394 communal incidents in which 322 were killed and 15,498 were injured.

It has been reported that UP had 162 such incidents Karnataka had 101 incidents in 2016. In 2015, these states had 155 and 105 incidents respectively. The situation was almost similar in 2014 too. While UP registered 133 incidents, Karnataka accounted for 73 incidents.
