High drama prevailed at the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) council meeting on Monday, when three lady corporators threatened to commit suicide in front of the Mayor.

The lady corporators - Manjula Narayanswamy (Laggere ward), Asha Suresh (HMT ward) and Mamatha Vasudev (JP Park ward) - attempted to drink phenol but were prevented by JD(S) MLC TA Sharavana and his supporters. The corporators said they were forced to take the extreme step as no action was taken against Rajarajeshwari Nagar MLA Munirathna Naidu, whose supporters had near disrobed corporator Manjula Narayanswami.

Last week (May 19), Manjula Narayanswami was mobbed by the supporters of MLA Munirathna Naidu when she was not invited for a public function in her own ward. She was pushed and humiliated and near disrobed. The unruly supporters' action had caught the nation's attention.

Upset corporator had even lodged a complaint against the MLA. But so far, no action has been taken against the supporters. The corporators came to the well of the council while the council meet was on. They demanded that Mayor listened to their plea. However, Mayor appealed to them to discuss the issue during the zero hour. But unrelenting, the corporators sat on the well and threatened to drink phenol from the bottles they were carrying.

However, JD(S) MLC Sharavana and his supporters rushed to the well and snatched the bottles from them. The whole incident put the house in pandemonium. The corporators sought to know why the guilty was not brought the book despite the whole incident was recorded on camera. They wondered if there was any value left for woman and woman corporators in Bengaluru. They were joined by MLC Sharavana too in protesting the inaction against Muniratna. Mayor had a tough time convincing the lady corporators to allow the council meeting.
