Fake Pourakarmikas are safe for now as BBMP withdraws order to detect them

The BBMP has yet again succumbed to the contractors’ lobby and withdrawn an order issued to detect ‘fake’ pourakarmikas, with in 7 days.  The contractors claim bills in the name of fake pourakarmikas and now nothing can check them.  In fact, the BBMp has no statistics of the number of contract workers it has engaged.  However, the payment made through contractors gets promptly released every month. Earlier the number of contract pourakarmikas was 18,000 within the BBMP scope.  As soon as the proposal to regularise the contract workers and also providing midday meals was put up the contract pourakarmikas number went up to 28,000. The contractors who are drawing wages in names of fake pourakarmikas were a suspicion, who became a reality, reported Kannada Prabha.

The BBMP published the names of contract pourakarmikas in its website. It also set up a separate examination team with 23 officials and a third party team to verify the list.  On July 10 the BBMP Commissioner issued an order to verify the names of contract pourakarmikas, their number, the Provident Fund, ESI and other facilities provided to them. However, on July 17 the Commissioner has withdrawn his order.

A meeting was called on July 7 with the waste disposal contractors at IPP office headed by BBMP Commissioner.  The contractors appealed that the information fed into the website was incomplete and to revise it. Hence a 3rd party person along with BBMP officials was set up and an order issued. However, soon after the team started examining the list the contractors brought in tremendous pressure fearing it would expose the malpractrices they are indulging in waste disposal.  Giving in to pressure the BBMP Commissioner has withdrawn his orders. Continuous efforts to trace the Commissioner on phone turned futile, reported Kannada Prabha.

BBMP Opposition leader Padmanabha Reddy has stated that bogus accounts are being given regarding pourakarmikas. The contractors fear transparency and hence bring pressure on the officials.
