Crossing Old Madras Road needs acrobatics

Crossing Old Madras Road is a matter of holding your life in your fist. Lakhs of vehicles use the National Highway number 75 stretch between Halasuru to Medahalli (BBMP limits) round the clock. Except at KR Pura and Tin Factory, there are no pedestrian crossings, skywalk or underpass at the entire stretch. This is also the cause for major accidents on this road, reports Kannada Prabha.

According to a survey by police department, the NH 75 is identified as the most dangerous road. Of the 17-km stretch of this road, 17 spots are marked as black spots. A total of 208 accidents have occurred at these spots. The most dense pedestrian crossing occurs at ITI bus stand, K R Pura opposite to BBMP office, Bhattarahalli junction and K R Pura extension. However, there is only one over bridge at K R Pura Nayak temple and nowhere else pedestrian crossings have been facilitated.

Moreover, the K R Pura and Tin Factory over bridges are too high and the steps are very steep. Elevator services are not provided. Senior citizens, differently-abled, sick and children cannot climb the steep steps. Those who are unable to climb the skywalks, try to cross the divider and meet with accidents. Karnataka Chalavadi Vedike president Chalavadi M Venkatesh has said that skywalks or underpass are of utmost urgent need on this NH to safeguard the pedestrians.
