Cantonment Metro Station location changed

The BMRCL has decided to change the location of Namma Metro Station at Cantonment railway station as the earlier proposed one was found to be unscientific and expensive also to bore a tunnel under the railway station. The new location is going to be Bamboo Bazar ground at Shivajinagar, reported Kannada Prabha.

Speaking at a press meet on Thursday MD BMRCL Pradeep Singh Kharola said with the changed plan Rs 1000 crore will be saved.  Also to build an underground station 40 meter depth has to be dug. Hence both financially and technically it is not feasible he said.

In the Metro second phase 21.25 km long Gottigere-Nagawara line will be installed. Of this 13.79 km will be underground. Earlier it was planned to go underground after Shivajinagar bus stand to reach Cantonment railways station. However it was found that there were too many turns, increased depth, reduced speed and financially not viable.  Hence the plan has been changed to Bamboo Bazar at Shivajinagara which is 1.8 km away from Cantonment railway station.

The experts had worked on the tracks and routes during second phase of the project and not the hurdles. Only when the Metro engineers inspect the plan they get the real picture. Majestic tunnel is 20 meters below. According to the instructions by Railways Board it should be 30 meters below.  However at Cantonment it was inevitable to have it at 40 meter below.  AC, escalator, preventing underground water seepage, oxygen supply and commuter handling all posed big challenges. Hence it was decided to change the location and plan he said.

Mahendra Jain, Additional Chief Secretary, Urban Development said the State Government had approved the design at Bamboo Bazar Metro station.
