Bureaucrats must learn Kannada, insists Chief Minister

All non-Kannada bureaucrats including must invariably learn Kannada, at least of SSLC standard and must interact in Kannada, insisted the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He was speaking at the felicitation of 59 candidates from the State who cleared Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) 2016 examinations with top grades. The programme was organised by the Kannada Development Authority on Wednesday at Gandhi Bhavan, reports Kannada Prabha.

The non-Kannada bureaucrats do not speak in Kannada even when they know the language. Some Kannada bureaucrats use English. “One particular bureaucrat would not learn Kannada. I was tired of telling him to learn, so we sent him on Central services”, said the Chief Minister. The State government is committed to pro-Kannada activities, including preserving the language, culture and developing it. All non-Kannada bureaucrats must and should learn Kannada, at least of SSLC level, he said. While congratulating 59 candidates who scored top ranks in UPSC, he appreciated five candidates who wrote in Kannada.  

Kannada and Culture Minister Umashree said the candidates selected for Central services must be very careful and face all challenges bravely. Whatever the circumstances they must not go out of the legal bounds. Wherever serving, they must not forget the mother language and mother land. To respond to the problems of the public should be the top priority, she advised.

Delivering his inaugural address chairman of Kannada Development Authority Prof SG Siddaramaiah said all departments of the government must use Kannada as the first preferential language in their websites. He has visited 14 departments till now to examine implementation of Kannada, he said. The Chief Minister felicitated all 59 candidates from the State, including Nandini, who scored first rank in UPSC.
