Bribery accused engineer sets himself on fire near Kolar

Apparently embarrassed and disturbed over his arrest, a 27-year-old engineer who was released on bail in a bribery case set himself on fire at Vangimalu village in Chintamani taluk of Kolar district on Wednesday.

The deceased identified as Srinath Reddy was a junior engineer on contract under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

Reports said that Lokayukta had arrested Reddy after he was caught red-handed while receiving a bribe from a farmer in January 2017. He was released on bail recently and was staying with his mother. However, Reddy reportedly went into depression as he had lost his job. He would confine himself and would not talk to anyone, reports said.

It is reported that Reddy took the extreme step to end his life by setting himself afire when his mother was asleep. He reportedly built a pyre and set himself on fire. The pyre was still burning when the family members saw it in the morning.

Srinath had lost his father a few years ago and was staying with his mother. He had joined the job last year.
