A 21-year-old woman entered the Jalahalli police station four in the morning on July 14, 2017, claiming that she had been gang-raped inside a van.
She stated that she was sedated by a woman when she was travelling in an auto, and then shifted to a van where two men raped her.
According to a Bangalore Mirror report, she claimed that a woman and her son asked her for help near the Jalahalli government school around 5 pm on July 14. She said that the boy was injured and his mother requested her to take him to a nearby hospital. While in an auto on the way to the hospital, the woman sprayed some chemical on her face and she fainted. After regaining consciousness, she found herself in a van with two men; she told the police.
However, the police became suspicious when they realized that her statements were inconsistent. Further questioning by the police broke her down. She admitted that she had filed a false rape case as she had not gone home in the night. She did this to mislead her husband and family. The police, however, took her to a hospital for a mandatory checkup.
A police officer said that they believed a gang was running a racket of trapping lone women and raping them to extort money. However, when her statements were being recorded, she confessed that she was lying.
“The woman had some disputes at home and had not gone back overnight. To convince her family members, she fabricated a false rape charge,” said Chethan Singh Rathor, DCP (North) to Bangalore Mirror.
The Jalahalli police had registered a case of gang rape (IPC 376D) and kidnap (IPC 366). They will now have to file a closure report.
