BBMP's smart parking to cause more traffic on 85 busy roads, claims expert

  • The BBMP is all set to bring in ticketless pay by space parking system.
  • This system is known to do well for closed and indoor parking but is being pushed for on the street in busy roads.
  • Each time a vehicle owner wants to park, he has to send a message to a designated number to get the confirmation message
  • This process alone will cause traffic in the 85 roads where the so called smart parking system was decided
BBMPs smart parking to cause more traffic in 85 busy roads claims expert

The smart street parking pioneer in India has launched a scathing attack on BBMP Road Infrastructure Cell's decision to introduce the Smart Parking on 85 roads. The expert is of the view that it will cause more traffic and also result in revenue leakage for the BBMP.

Suhail Yusuff, General Secretary, Brigade Shops Establishments Association, who first introduced the automated parking on Brigade Road after visiting over 70 countries and a research of four years on the parking system subject said," The BBMP's so-called smart parking is mindless.

The concerned engineers say the vehicle owner has to pay for space. A new concept by BBMP in which, users will have to send a message to the number displayed on designated board in allocated parking space. Followed by then a confirmation being sent to the mobile phone and then the owner will get a chance to park. Imagine the amount of time one will be wasting on the road and causing traffic!”

He dubbed this new system as best suited for enclosed parking like basements, shopping malls and off-street parking but BBMP is pushing hard to get this new system and has invited two companies to take up 85 roads which will be furthered classified into A, B and C category. CivicSmart along with its partner firm EmQos are the two bidders who have been shortlisted for the management of the automated parking facility.

"The contractors will loot the money and BBMP will be at a loss. Imagine Brigade alone generates Rs 27 lakh for BBMP. If they bring the tried and tested method like in Brigade and Commercial Street parking system there is a potential to get over Rs 350 crores just from parking fee alone. Hence this current idea of BBMP's smart parking should be dropped, and a more valid concept should be taken," he added.

The first phase of smart parking in Bengaluru has begun on St Mark’s Road. At an investment of Rs 85 crore, the project aims to solve the problem of parking.

However, BBMP officials say, there is the possibility of corruption even  in pay and park system being used in the automated parking system at Brigade Road. So they have come up with ticketless parking system. When asked about the feasibility and its working as the about-to-be adopted system has failed even is the USA, the officials brushed aside the questions.
