BBMP invites tenders for 23 more skywalks in Bengaluru

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has floated tenders for construction of 23 skywalks at different locations in the City. The locations include KPCC office, KC General Hospital, Deepanjali Nagar junction, Command Hospital Air Force Road, Housing Board bus stand, Angala Parameshwari temple, Channasandra Circle, Kadirenahalli Cross, Ambalipura Gate - Sarjapura, Pantara Palya bus stand, Old Airport Road HAL post office, Kudremukh Iron Ore factory Sarjapura, TVS Circle Jalahalli, MKS extension Doddakallasandra, Central Mall Jayanagar, BEL Underpass - Outer Ring Road, ITI Colony Outer Ring Road, Nagarabhavi 2nd Stage, Hosur Main Road 7th cross, Naidu Road, Yediyur Market, Yediyur lake.

The deboot system requires the advertiser to construct, maintain and pay tax and rent to BBMP for letting the use of space. BBMP had identified 150 spots for construction of skywalks. However, the advertisers mafia, which has had its strong foothold in BBMP takes care to see that tenders are called only for those spots that are profitable for displaying ads, reported Kannada Prabha.

Mayor G Padmavathi defended the tenders stating that no one participates in the tender process if called at not-so-popular places. Hence, the BBMP has decided to permit skywalks at spots prefered by the advertisers.

It can be recalled that most of the skywalks already constructed are criticised for lacking in facilitating the public to use them. There are no escalators or lifts that is senior citizen friendly in some of the skywalks. Yet, the BBMP is still going ahead with the construction of  more skywalks.
