Bengaluru City witnessed heavy rush for immersing Ganesha idols on Sunday, the third day of the festival. By 9.30 pm, as many as 1, 51,416 Ganesha idols were immersed in various tanks. Even though the deadline for immersion was at 10.30, the BBMP was forced to extend till 12 am as there was a huge crowd at all tanks and ponds waiting to immerse the ganesha idols. By the end of Sunday, the total number of Ganesha idols immersed crossed 2.5 lakh, reports Kannada Prabha.

On Friday, the total number of idols immersed in all eight zones of the City stood at 2,08,585. In temporary ponds and tankers around 90,000 idols were immersed. In Sankey Tank, 9120 mud and 1100 Ganesha idols made of PoP were immersed. In Halasuru Tank, 26,317 mud and 2,916 PoP Ganeshas were immersed. In Yadiyuru Tank, a total 20,450 Ganesha idols were immersed.

But the immersion left mounds of garbage at the tank area. Even KR Market, Madivala market, KR Puram market, Malleswaram and Johnson markets were littered with tons of garbage. The contractors have not cleared the garbage, attracting complaints from the public and the traders. Mayor G Padmavathi was supposed to visit the markets on Sunday but she postponed it, fearing the public outrage over uncleared garbage.

Contractor Gopinath has said that they are not supplied with appropriate auto tippers to clear the garbage. He also said that they are sanctioned lesser fee than other contractors and hence he is not lifting the garbage. As a result, the markets have become a dump yard and are stinking.
