After Kidney Ailment Scare Bengaluru Water Causes Cancer Worry

If you are thinking that the underground  water available to you in Bengaluru is free of chemicals and can keep you healthy in the long run, then you are wrong. According to the lake activists and scientists, the underground available has high amount of nitrates and chemicals present in it which can cause Cancer and Kidney failure.

Speaking to the Newsable, Ramprasad, Friends of Lake, member said, "All the sewage water and chemicals from factories flows in the lakes across the city. It has high amount of nitrate content in it. Nitrate is a cancer causing element. This nitrate content is also present in the ground water. With most of the houses opting to digging bore wells, The more deeper they dig for water, the more amount of nitrate and hard metals are found."

Apart from this, this water has resulted in Kidney failures. According to the reports of  Central Water Resource Ministry which was published last year, the underground water in Bengaluru Urban and rural areas contain contents of hard metals and chemicals in dissolved form which are above the permissible limits.

Activists also say that this kind of pollution is caused only by the human beings. "It is due to improper handling of sewage water. All the sewage of the city flows into the storm water drains and all though there is a technology of STPs adopted to purify the water, one cannot assure that the treated water reaches the ground water table," he added.

Dr Phani Kumar Pullela, Head Department of Chemistry , CMRIT Bengaluru said, with most of the lakes in Bengaluru getting polluted, the toxins would have seeped  underground. Not only the fish from polluted tanks but the bore wells in the periphery will be contaminated with toxic substance  and when consumed, it enters into human system and caused health hazards.

"Due the presence of Nitrate and other enzymes people will definitely get infected  with cancer. The cases could increase further if the lake pollution is not addressed," he said.
