BR Balakrishnan, Director General of Investigation (Karnataka and Goa), Income Tax Department, is said to be the mastermind of IT raids on DK Shivakumar.
1) Demonetisation
BR Balakrishnan became a Singham-like name following the announcement of demonetisation by Narendra Modi government in the Centre on November 8, last year. It is said that he was responsible for amassing Rs 4,300 crore of undisclosed income admitted by persons from April 1, 2016, in Karnataka and Goa.
The strict officer as he is known, Balakrishnan was conferred a special award by the Election Commission of India for expenditure monitoring.
2) Blueprint ready six months ago?
Suvarna channel claimed that plans for this raid were made six months ago. Though holding Gujarat Congress MLAs looked like the reason behind surprise raid on DK Shivakumar, the sources say it was well planned, and there was no element of surprise (for the IT department) as the plans were ready six months ago and chose the resort as the best time and place to carry out the plan.
3) From Revenue to IT
Balakrishnan is an IRS (Indian Revenue Service), passed out in 1983. He became the Director General of Income Tax (Investigation) in 2016 September, just before the announcement of demonetisation. He had also worked as the Principal Director of the Income Tax Department for two years.
4) No permission, just entry
The IT officers had gained entry into the Eagleton Resort two days before the raid, and they were staying at two villas in the resort. When they set out for the raid, they did not even ask for DK Shivakumar or his brother DK Suresh's room number from the reception, but just barged in. This is a clear indication that activities of all inside the Eagleton Resort were being monitored.
5) Visit to DK Shivakumar's house
It is said that the person who planned the raid visited DK Shivakumar in his house where IT officials are grilling the minister for over two days. No information is available if he held talks with DKS or just met the IT officials, but it looks like the strict officer is happy about the fact that things are turning out as he had planned.
