The High Court has cancelled the death sentence issued by a lower court to four members of the notorious Dandupalya gang in connection with the ill famous double murder committed 17 years ago at Hubballi.

The 4 members of Dandupalya gang Venkatesh alias Chandra, Munikrishna alias Krishna, Nallatimma alias Thimma and Lakshmamma alias Lakshmi were issued death sentence by the 34th Additional City Civil and Sessions Court in Hubballi, for the alleged murder of Dr Prabhakara and his son Neelakantha Joshi in Hubballi in 2000.

They had appealed to the High Court Registrar General. The division bench comprising justice Ravi Malimath and justice John Michael D'Cunha acquitted the four for lack of evidence.

The bench admitted the appeal submitted by Venkatesh and Munikrishna and though Nallatimma and Lakshmi had not submitted separate appeals, since the bench dismissed the sentence issued by the lower court all 4 of them were acquitted. However since several more cases are pending against them, the Dandupalya members are not yet free to be released.
