Despite loan waiver, 3 farmers end lives in a single day!

  • Farmers' suicide has gone up to 100 even after the farm loan waiver was announced

100 farmers commit suicide after loan waiver total 407 farmers dead

Farmers committing suicide in the State has not stopped even after the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced farm loan waiver from co-operative banks. On Sunday, three farmers committed suicide unable to repay the loans as the crops had failed. With this, the number of farmers committing suicide has gone up to 100 even after the announcement of farm loan waiver, taking the total toll to 407 since Jan 2017, reports Kannada Prabha.

Honnappa Shankrapap Barki (54) of Tadasa village, Byadagi taluk, Haveri district, Manjappa (34), Inooru village, Honnali taluk, Davanagere district, Subhash Chandra Avaji (58) Shiralakoppa, Shivamogga district committed suicide. Honnappa had taken a loan of Rs 5 lakh from various banks and personal loans from friends. Unable to repay it, he hung himself from a tree. Manjappa had a loan of Rs 7 lakh and he consumed poison. while Subhash Chandra had raised a loan of Rs 2 lakh loan from SBI and co-operative bank. He had four-and-half acre land in which he was cultivating paddy. Both the borewells in his farm had dried up forcing him to end his life, reports Kannada Prabha. 

It can be recalled here that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had announced loan waiver of Rs 50,000 from cooperative banks and has appealed to the Central government to waive farm loans from nationalised banks too but in vain.
