BJP's Tamil Nadu unit chief L Murugan was arrested at Tiruttani near Chennai by police as he tries to embark on statewide 'Vetrivel Yatra' (Victorious Spear March) in defiance of a ban on such public events in view of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The arrest of Murugan and around 100 party workers came a day after the Tamil Nadu government informed the Madras High Court that the proposed Yatra from November 6 to December 6, will not be allowed given the pandemic situation in the state.

A defiant state BJP chief Murugan decided to go ahead with his march stating, "The Constitution of India guarantees every person's right to worship their Gods in the way they wish; based on this, I am going to Tiruttani to worship Lord Muruga."

Backing Murugan, another BJP leader H Raja had said this morning: "The state govt is allowing schools to reopen but not permitting the yatra saying there is a fear of the second wave of Covid-19. If allowed we'll go ahead with the yatra, else it'll be an agitation."
