Swachh Bharat Abhiyan helps man bury wife alive

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan helped a man bury his wife alive

In the name of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Chandmal Jain, who runs a grocery store in Majeragaon, hired local labourers to construct a toilet in his house in April. He was highly appreciated in the neighbourhood ever since his sudden obsession with cleanliness came to light.

However, one day he asked the labourers to halt construction, claiming that he doesn’t have enough money to pay them. On the same day, as he later confessed to the police, he threw his wife, Sarita, into the pit and buried her alive.

After a few days, his neighbours started enquiring about Sarita, to which he replied saying that she had gone to her parent’s house after a fight. On June 1, he registered a missing person’s complaint with the Kelwada police.“He told us that Sarita had taken ₹5,000 and left 15 days ago without informing him,” a constable said.

According to the Kelwada police, Jain and his wife Sarita, would fight often. They got married in October 2013 and Sarita had become bedridden for some time. A police official further said that Jain had got tired of her poor health and decided to kill his wife.

On Sunday, the police finally managed to dig out the decomposed remains of Sarita from his house and sent a team to Mumbai to arrest Jain, who was hiding at his relative’s residence in Kandivli.
