A significant espionage probe involving suspected Pakistani handlers and alleged cross-border spying has now focused on a CCTV camera installed along a highway in Punjab. Baljit Singh, a Pathankot resident, was apprehended by Punjab Police on suspicion of surreptitiously observing Indian Army and paramilitary activity close to the crucial Pathankot-Jammu corridor and disseminating the video to handlers connected to Pakistan.
Investigators claim that the case highlights a new trend of inexpensive but very effective monitoring operations utilising readily accessible internet-enabled equipment. Baljit Singh, a resident of Chakk Dhariwal village in Pathankot district, is accused by Punjab Police of installing an internet-based CCTV camera at a store close to a bridge on National Highway-44, the vital Pathankot-Jammu road that is regularly used by Army and paramilitary convoys.
Investigators believe the camera was placed purposefully to record the movement of military vehicles and troops as they approached Jammu and Kashmir in real time. Allegedly, handlers in Pakistan received the live stream.

Baljit Singh of the Pathankot district's Chakk Dhariwal village has been named as the culprit. During questioning, he allegedly admitted to installing the camera earlier this year, according to the police.
Investigators are currently looking into his financial transactions, communication trail, and potential connections to a larger espionage network that operates in border states, according to a Times of India article. Singh reportedly received about Rs 40,000 for the operation from an unnamed individual in Dubai, according to the police.
