Ramjas college violence Shehla Rashid blames ABVP

Ramjas College of Delhi University recently grabbed attention for all the wrong reasons when violence broke out over ABVP’s protest against the invite to two JNU students Umar Rashid and Shehla Rashid to speak on a two-day seminar.

Interestingly, on the first day of the seminar in view of ABVP protest, alleged stone pelting at the venue and other disruption like cutting off electricity the organisers cancelled the invites to the JNU students as well as cancelled the day two of the seminar. Day two of the seminar saw violence as members of the nationalist student organisation ABVP blocked the college entry gate and the left-affiliated AISA got opposed ABVP.

The members of both the parties violently attacked each other including hitting each other with hockey sticks that left many of them bleeding. Many teachers, policemen and a number of journalists also sustained injuries in the violence though a large contingent of police personnel was deployed across the North Campus of the Delhi University.

The clashes took place around 1 PM, and police could bring the situation under control five hours later. A group of students were also locked up allegedly by ABVP activists for four hours at the college campus.

Police said a FIR under various IPC sections of rioting and assault of public servant has been lodged against unknown persons. They FIR was filed based on the version of the SHO of the Maurice Nagar police station and not on the basis of complaints by AISA-backed students and teachers belonging to Delhi University Teachers Association.

An investigation by two additional DCPs has also been ordered. Seven police personnel including the SHO of the Maurice Nagar sustained injuries.

Meanwhile, student activist and a former member of JNU Student Union, Shehla Rashid, alleged that "Not only the ABVP completely disrupted the seminar, they were also abusing, beating women and even journalists leaving some profusely bleeding. Why can't the police see such hooliganism? There is adequate police presence on the campus, but nobody from ABVP has been detained yet."

She also alleged that "police joined the ABVP goons" in attacking her. Rashid through a number of Tweets made several allegations against ABVP and also shared pictures of an English department professor who received serious injuries. Several other tweets also have pictures of injured students:
