The earthquake, which hit the mountainous Kunar province, caused widespread destruction, flattening homes and buildings. According to Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid, over 800 people were confirmed dead and over 2,800 injured in Kunar alone. In neighbouring Nangarhar province, 12 deaths and 255 injuries were reported.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, earlier in the day, also condoled on the deadly earthquake in Afghanistan. EAM wrote on X, "The devastating earthquake in Kunar Province of Afghanistan is a matter of deep concern. Express our support and solidarity to the Afghan people as they respond to it. India will extend assistance in this hour of need. Our condolences to the families of the victims. And our prayers for early recovery of the injured."

Worst-hit districts and rescue challenges

The scale of the disaster has triggered a massive rescue and relief operation. Taliban authorities, supported by international organizations including the United Nations, have deployed teams to deliver emergency medical care, food and shelter. The UN in Afghanistan said it was 'deeply saddened' by the tragedy and confirmed that its teams were already on the ground delivering lifesaving support.

According to reports from Taliban-run authorities, the districts of Nur Gul, Soki, Watpur, Manogi and Chapa Dara in Kunar province suffered the heaviest destruction. In neighbouring Nangarhar province, at least nine people lost their lives and many others were injured. Entire villages built with fragile mud and stone collapsed, while landslides blocked crucial roads and damaged communication lines, slowing down relief work.

Officials confirmed the rising casualties and appealed for urgent international support. Rescue teams, including helicopters, were dispatched, but operations have been severely hindered by the rugged terrain and widespread infrastructure damage. The tragedy highlights Afghanistan’s deep vulnerability to earthquakes in its remote, mountainous regions, coming less than two years after another deadly quake. Tremors from the 6.0-magnitude earthquake were also felt in several parts of Pakistan.
