The National Students' Union of India (NSUI) on Monday began a sit-in protest at Jamia Millia Islamia University, alleging corruption and irregularities in the admission process and demanding greater transparency and accountability in spot admissions.
According to NSUI, the protesters are seeking a fair investigation into the alleged irregularities and have urged the university administration to address the concerns raised by students.
The student organisation said the protest is focused on alleged discrepancies in the spot admission process and called for transparency in the procedures followed by the university. "We request you to take note of the ongoing protest and cover the issue so that the concerns of students are brought to the attention of the university administration," NSUI said.
University's Stance and Appeal to Students
The protest comes amid Jamia Millia Islamia's ongoing admission process and its efforts to welcome students from across the country into various academic programmes.
Around a month ago, Jamia Millia Islamia had issued a welcome message for newly admitted students, highlighting its commitment to providing a strong academic and research environment. In a post on X, the university said it placed the highest value on the education, personal growth, well-being and professional future of its students.
Jamia Millia also acknowledged that many of its students come from distant parts of the country and socially and economically marginalised backgrounds, for whom university education remains a significant opportunity. The university said it was working to provide an optimal academic and research ecosystem, along with academic and extracurricular facilities, to help students develop the skills and knowledge required for future opportunities.
The administration also urged students and stakeholders to refrain from activities that are not in accordance with the law and appealed to students to remain responsible and focused on their studies. "Stay focused on your studies and academic responsibilities and be resolute in fulfilling your primary goal of achieving academic excellence and building a bright career," the university had said.
